Centennial Gate Update

What’s going on with the Pi Beta Phi Centennial Gate?  The University of Arkansas Planning office invited the actives for a “walk-around” on Friday, May 4. Here I am with two members, Sarah, the new president, and Caitlin. The project will near completion on June 30, 2012 so there will be something to see while you are on campus for the reunion. Mark your calendars for Friday, September 21, 2012  for the dedication at 1:00 p.m. There will be an event at the house afterward, and the alumns are having a reception at Carnall Hall later.

You can go to:  http://newswire.uark.edu/article.aspx?id=18352 to see some cool photos and get more information. Looks like they are still fund-raising for the maintenance.

You can also go to: http://planning.uark.edu and look for the Pi Beta Phi link on the right under “Current Projects.” You’ll get a great view of the construction progress through time-lapsed photography.

Your Tour of Crystal Bridges

Kim and I have visited Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art twice to set up our visit there. And both times, we’ve been astounded at the beauty of the building and the landscape, as well as the art. Not only will it be an opportunity to visit with your sisters (and have a mimosa) on the bus on the drive to and from there, but also it will give you a chance to see some of America’s greatest art. No kidding, people from all over the world have been visiting since the museum opened in 11-11-11. Just last week, the Smithsonian brought 200 people to visit. We can’t wait for you to see it.

Here is the promised more detail decription of the two tours so you can decide how to spend your visit after lunch:

Greatest Hits
A grand stroll through the permanent collection (buildings 2-6). Visit some of the best known names in American Art.
Enduring quesitons:
  •            What makes a work of art “great?”
  •         How do we define “American” art?
  •           How does the art of America define us a nation, and speak to the time periods of our history – and present?
  •         Who are the artists that define American art?

Expressions of Nature
Landscapes: the origins, evolution, grand manner and contemporary interpretations. 6 stops. 50 minutes
Enduring Questions:
  • How have American artists expressed their feelings about nature in art?
  • What constitutes a “landscape?”
  • Why are landscapes such a timeless element in American art?
Or you may want to tour on your own (3.5 miles of trails with some sculpture)

See you in June.

A Gathering of Angels - 2012

Save the Date for a reunion of the Arkansas Alpha Pi Beta Phi initiation classes of 1964 through 1969. The weekend of June 8-10, 2012 has been chosen for another "gathering of angels" at the Pi Beta Phi house in Fayetteville.

Plans for the weekend are in progress. Right now, we are just trying to get the word out to all of our sisters. We want to do as much communication as possible by technology. If you DID NOT receive a “Save the Date” notice by e-mail, then we are missing your e-mail address. Please send your current e-mail address to: arkareunion@gmail.com

A postcard notice about the reunion has recently been sent. If you did not receive one, please send us your current mailing address, along with your e-mail address, to: arkareunion@gmail.com. We do need your help in gathering e-mail and mailing addresses of lost sisters and will be publishing those names soon.

We are also asking that you choose a class reunion chairperson.  The weekend activities will be similar to those of the past (more information to come), and we thought that each initiation class could be responsible for the organization of one activity.

We are very excited about this...the gathering for the Centennial Gate dedication was fun, but nothing compares to staying in the house, stepping back in time, sharing past memories, and making new ones with "old" friends.

"Happy is the person who knows what to remember of the past, what to enjoy in the present, and what to plan for in the future"

Plan to be there on June 8-10, 2012. Bookmark this blog and join us on the Facebook group – Ark Alpha Pi Beta Phi Classes 64-69 - for updates on the weekend's activities.

Ring-Ching,

Kim Robertson Bennett '66
Dixie Terrell Kline '66

Photo above is of the May 1985 reunion in the house. Of course, we all still feel this young and look this cute! We missed the class of 1969 at this reunion, but you joined us in 2006 and hopefully you will all join us for the 2012 reunion.
